The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) revealed that the current undiscovered gas potential in Nigeria is 600 trillion Cubic Feet (TCF), the guardian reports.
Engr. Saidu Mohammed, the Group Executive Director/ Chief Operating Officer, Gas and Power Companies, NNPC, in a paper titled: “Re-Evaluating the Development of the Nigerian Gas Industry”, said that Nigeria has a huge economic potential trapped in its vast natural.
“Currently Nigeria is number 9th largest Proven gas reserves in the world”.
Despite the huge gas potential in the country, the sector has not been able to contribute significantly to power generation due to pipeline vandalism, he said
He said that gas supply to power increased significantly at the beginning of the year with a record peak power generation of 5079MW (80 per cent thermal generation) on February 2nd 2016.
He noted that due to the recent sabotage on gas pipeline, gas supply has significantly dropped from 1400mmscfd to barely below 700mmscfd.
