In a recent press release by the head of communications Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Mr Emeka Ezeh, three accused youths have been arrested , tried and convicted for crimes ranging from conspiracy, vandalising armoured cables and transformers belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC)
Two of the accused persons – Ndubuisi Ogbonnia (18 years), and Chinedu Gabriel (21 years) were prosecuted at the Federal High Court, Abakaliki, where they both pleaded guilty to the two (2) count charge of conspiracy and vandalisation of cables belonging to EEDC at Abakaliki.
The presiding Judge, Hon. Justice M. A. Onyetenu (Miss), sentenced Ndubuisi Ogbonnia and Chinedu Gabriel (first and second Defendants) to a jail term of 3 years on the first count of conspiracy. On the second count of vandalism, the Judge sentenced the first Defendant, Ndubuisi Ogbonnia to a jail term of 4 years, while the second Defendant, Chinedu Gabriel was sentenced to serve a 6-year jail term. The sentences are to run concurrently with effect from date of first custody
The third offender by the name Ifeanyichukwu Okoye was also sentenced to a three(3) years imprisonment on the 1st Count of conspiracy and tampering with electric cables contrary to Section 3 (6) and Section 1 (9) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act and 5 years imprisonment on the 2nd Count of unlawfully removing electric cable, property of EEDC contrary to Section 1 (9) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap. M17 volume 9, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The cables which were presented as exhibits A1 – A6 which were recovered from the accused were ordered to be returned to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) wishes to reiterate its commitment towards fighting vandalism; and calls on well meaning and law abiding citizens to work together in fighting this ugly menace.
The efforts of other vigilante groups, Civil Defense Corps, the Army and the Nigerian Police were also commended for their tireless efforts in ensuring the culprits behind the heinous acts were brought to book.
