House of Reps Pushes For The Creation Of Electricity Commission Law To Strengthen Biofuels Energy

House of Representatives yesterday pushed for the creation of a commission to expedite the action to explore the adoption of biofuels as alternative energy source in Nigeria.

Hon. Kingsley Chinda debating a bill seeking to set up the commission to be known as Biofuels Energy Regulatory Commission, the lawmakers said the setting up of the commission would require to rip off of utilisation of biofuels as an alternative energy source from National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Consequently, the lawmakers also resolved to work towards the establishment of Biofuels Research Agency as an organ of government to quicken research into the area.

To avoid conflicts in policies regarding the plan, Speaker Yakubu Dogara asked the House Committee on Science and Technology to look at the proposal and report back to the House.

The Speaker also told the House Committee on Power to look into lawmakers plan to push for the amendment of Electric Power Sector Reform Act to reposition NERC for effective service delivery.

Hon. Chinda in his comment said the adoption of biofuels would minimise pollution and encourage job creation as many Nigerians would take to agriculture, maintaining that crops such as cassava and sugar cane were useful in the generation of the alternative energy source.
