On Friday, 20th of January, TCN, General Manager (Public Affairs), Mrs. Seun Olagunju, confirmed a fire incident at Afam V power station. The incident occurred at about 6:58am on Wednesday, 18th of January.

She stated that the fire has constrained the evacuation of guaranteed 450MW generation by the station and completely destroyed TCNs protection and control equipment in its relay and control room.

According to her, the cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed. However, in response to this unfortunate event, TCN quickly mobilized a team to the site and they promptly isolated the faulty section of the substation. They also made alternative arrangement for evacuation of power generated by Afam VI generation into the grid.

She, however, also explained that the fire incident was not the major cause of the current low power generation. Rather, it was due to the vandalism of gas pipelines that resulted in short supply of gas to the thermal generating stations.

She stated that, the company has strengthened its resolve to continue to work towards further expanding the nation’s transmission grid in line with its grid expansion plans.
