Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has stated that the Federal Government plans to generate 2000MW of solar energy.
The Minister had just gone on a tour to the 7th General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), in Abu Dabi, United Arab Emirate and Ethiopia. He shared the outcome of the tour in a word press conference, also explaining the arrangements of the federal Government. He said out of the 2000MW to be generated this year, 1000MW will be off the grid while the other 1000MW will be on the grid.
DR. Onu emphasized on the relevance of renewable energy in Nigeria’s quest for sustainable power. He said it is necessary for Nigeria to join the word in the use of renewable energy because it is the only sustainable way to ensure global accessibility of energy.
“Basically, what is happening now is that the world wants to reserve our environment and hand over our planet to our children and future generations in a manner that they would find this planet habitable,” Onu stated.
