According to the 2017 budget recently presented to the National Assembly by the President, N69.9bn was allocated to the power sector.
The biggest chunk goes to the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN. They are to receive N40.2bn. The allocation to other agencies in the Ministry of Power are as follows:
National Rural Electricity Agency, NREA, with N16.137 billion. National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, was allocated N2 billion National Electricity Management Services Agency, NEMSA, N2.837 billion National Power Training Institute, NAPTI, N2.465 billion National Electricity Liability Management Limited, NELMCO, N2. 718 billion National Bulk Electricity Trading, NBET, N3,595 billion It is worthy of note that the entire allocation to the TCN would be channelled directly into capital projects. Their overhead and personnel costs are expected to be raised from their income from consumers. As touching projects, N5bn was provided for a 215 megawatts LPFO/Gas Plant. The location was however not indicated in the document submitted by the President.
The Zungeru 700 MW project in Niger State was allocated N1.360 billion while another N373.6m was allotted for the provision of infrastructure for the same project. The 3,050 MW Mambilla Hydropower project is budgeted to receive N950 million and the 10MW Wind Farm in Kastina would gulp N904, 546 million. The National Assembly, upon resumption from their Christmas/New Year break will commence deliberations on the budget in earnest.
