How Much Is Your Refrigerator Costing You In Electric Bills?


Refrigerators use up a lot of energy and often account for one-sixth of an entire home’s electrical bills. This makes it even more paramount to monitor just how much power your refrigerator is consuming and how much this costs in electrical bills.

Below we will be discussing a basic approach to calculating the energy consumption of your refrigerator(s) and it’s cost implication.

  • Step 1: Evaluate Energy Efficiency

Most refrigerators claim to be energy efficient, however, it is still important to evaluate just how efficient these appliances are. You can do this by checking the back of your refrigerator for a tag/sticker that reveals the wattage of the unit. Modern day refrigerators use about 300 watts while older, energy inefficient models can use up to 55o watts.

  • Step 2: Consider Cycle on/Cycle off Periods

After getting the wattage (or using a safe assumption, say – 300 watts) of your refrigerator, the next step is to divide the wattage of your refrigerator by 3. Your refrigerator cycles on and off, and only consumes the maximum wattage about one-third of the time it’s plugged in. Hence, a 300 watts appliance will only be considered to consume 100 watts. This is because refrigerators typically consume maximum wattage only one-third of the time it’s in use.


  • Step 3: Convert To KiloWatts

This can be done by simply dividing the wattage by 1000. For example, 100 watts/ 1000 = 0.1kw.

NB: This process should be repeated for all the refrigerators you use, assuming you have more than one


  • Step 4: Estimate Daily Consumption

Multiply this value you obtained above by the average number of hours you use the appliance daily. If you use a 300 watts’ refrigerator for 7 hours daily. Then

0.1 x 7 Hours = 0.7KwH

  • Step 4: Evaluate Monthly Energy Consumption

Multiply the obtained value in step 4 with the 30-day period in which you’re being billed and cross reference your final value with your electric bill statement.

0.7 x 30 days= 21kwh (for the months)

  • Step 6: Consider Local Tariff

Multiply this value by the amount charged for one Kilowatt unit as started in your bill statement, according to your local distribution company’s tariff plan (usually between 14 Nara to 52 Naira depending on the DisCo).

For example: If you are charged 40 Naira per KwH, Hence.

21kwH x 40 = 840 Naira Per Month.

This implies that a typical 300 Watts refrigerator being used for 7 hours daily will cost about 840 Naira monthly in electricity bills.
