Reacting to continuous complaints made by consumers, centring around over-billing, resulting from the estimated billing system, NERC mandated the Discos to meter consumers across their franchise areas, on or before 1st of March or face consequences. NERC also encouraged unmetered customers to lodge reports at any of its offices from the due date.

The distribution companies, however, responded to this, saying NERC’s mandate could not be achieved especially considering the current foreign exchange regime in the country, adding that the situation had made it practically impossible for them to source fund for the procurement of the metering facilities.
The due date has been reached and distribution companies have till not metered most customers. Consumers are very curious as to what will become of the NERC mandate
