An unfortunate electrical accident occurred at about 9:50 pm on Thursday, 20th of April 2017 at Nsaha Effiom Street, Calabar. The UNICAL 11kv feeder snapped over a football viewing centre resulting in the loss of lives.
It has been confirmed contrary to various rumours that 7 lives were lost and 11 people were left severely injured after the accident. The corpses of the deceased have, however, been deposited at the mortuary, while the survivors are currently receiving medical attention at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
The distribution company on receiving the news released a statement at about 2 am on Friday, sympathising with the families of the victims and the community as a whole.
In the statement, the PHED Spokesperson, Mr John Onyi, assured that while the investigation of the accident was ongoing, the feeder had been isolated to ensure that no further damage was done on lives.
“While we await the outcome of the investigation, our customers are advised to remain calm, law abiding and accord our men the necessary cooperation to unravel the cause of the unfortunate incident.”
The Chief Operating Officer (COO), Engr. Kingsley Achife in another statement also sympathised with the families of the bereaved;
“Our heartfelt condolences goes to the bereaved families. May God give the families the courage to bear the loss.
“We also sympathize with those who sustained injuries and wish them quick recovery”, he said.
Engr Achife also urged the residents to remain calm and law abiding and to accord the team the necessary support during the investigation. He thanked the law enforcement agencies for responding quickly and ensuring that the victims were taken to the Teaching Hospital.
He appreciated the Cross River State Governor, His Excellency, Ben Ayade, who through his deputy came to the scene of the incident and calmed the nerves of the affected community.
Achife used the opportunity to further inform the customers of the company and members of the public, to always adhere to safety rules by not erecting any building or structure under high tension lines.
