Bring Back Our Light Volunteer Group Appeals To BEDC Concerning 3 Year Power Outage In Ondo South

Just when we thought the seven-year outage situation at Ibusa, Delta state was a one-off event, it appears that another area under the BEDC distribution zone might be heading for another lengthy period of time in darkness. In 2014, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) disconnected four local councils in Ondo south district from the national grid due to unpaid electricity debts.

According to the Guardian, this has resulted in the formation of BBOL (whch stands for bring back our light) which is a volunteer group determined to restore power to the selected area. The affected areas are reported to include Okitipupa, Irele, Ilaje and Ese-Odo local councils.

A statement signed by the Chairman of BBOL, Prof. Francis Igbasan and other members of the group, read: “We have agreed that certain amount of money will be paid to defray our indebtedness to BEDC and payment modalities shall be handled by sub-committees to be set up in furtherance of the said objectives.

“The BEDC should stop manipulating the bills of innocent electricity consumers, and as a matter of urgency make pre-paid meters available to them. All electricity cables and poles affected by rainstorm should be immediately restored at no cost to the consumers.

“BEDC officials should not depend on outdated styles of meter readings because from available information, dilapidated, abandoned and uncompleted houses were estimated and added to the bills of these communities.”

Now, we can debate the whether or not the naming of this group is trivial considering the sensitive nature of the subject of the abducted girls which invariably brought about the Bring Back Our Girls Campaign. however, what can not be debated is the noble cause in which this group stands for. Under no condition should a  group of people should be out of power supply for so long.

What do you make of the Situation?

Was BEDC right to have disconnected those areas for so long?

Do you know of any areas experiencing similar lengthy power outage?
