KEDCO Launches Installation Of 15,000 More Meters

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has launched the installation of 15,000 meters more for customers under its distribution zones. This exercise marks the second phase of the company’s free-meter deployment exercise in the state. This is coming after the first phase of the metering, which was launched in June last year with 15, 000 meters installed at various residences in Kabuga area.

At the launch of the installation exercise which held at Mundubawa road in Nassarawa Local Government Area of the state, the Chief Operating Officer of the KEDCO, Mr Raul Sing disclosed that the distribution company had procured up to 65,000 meters for free deployment to electricity consumers in its franchise areas.

The COO explained that considering the constant occurrence of overbilling and electricity debt issues and despite apprehension by KEDCO’s customers about the new meters, the company deemed it necessary to deploy them in order to ensure equitable assessment of energy consumption by customers, stressing the company wants to ensure that customers only paid for what they have consumed.

Chief Customer Relations Officer, Alhaji Abubakar Yusuf, also spoke at the launch. He explained why it was necessary for the company to meter as many customers as possible adding that proper metering will allow the company save and distribute energy more judiciously.

“Everybody knows that we don’t have enough energy to meet the demand of our customers in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, but with accurate metering, we can save some energy for equitable distribution to customers,” he said.

Recall that the Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) gave the distribution companies a mandate last year to meter all their customers or be sanctioned.
