IBEDC is the franchised power distribution company for Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara and parts of Niger, Ekiti and Kogi States. The official statement reads thus;

“In the light of recent meter racketeering publication, the Management Of IBEDC would like to categorically state that meters are free and that under no circumstances should customers pay any amount whatsoever to staff for meters. Any staff demanding for payment before providing a meter is fraudulent and would be disciplined when caught, as we have always done. We wish to emphatically state that meter racketeering is an industry wide epidemic and all DisCos have similar challenges due to paucity of funds.

As ordered by NERC, payment of meter has been discontinued since the dissolution of CAPMI and any other similar independent metering plan. The only official channel for getting meters is through our free meter rollout scheme. However due to the huge financial constraints faced by the entire sector and DisCos in particular, we have been unable to meter all customers as this will reduce the current heavy losses incurred daily from energy theft, therefore IBEDC remains committed to metering all our customers despite the daunting challenges.

It has been emphasized continuously through numerous community engagements, radio, TV, flyers, posters, road shows, web, social media and every other form of communication, that paying for meters to any staff is fraud and only serves to empower the corrupt vices seeking to take advantage of the system and unsuspecting customers. Any meter procured under such circumstances is not genuine and would be removed from the company’s database when discovered.

We appeal to our esteemed customers and the general public that anyone who has information about a member of staff that demands payment for the meters should please forward it via our whistleblower channels as this will aid us in our efforts at sanitizing the system.”
