Everyone knows that saving energy means you save money. We have also established that using energy efficiently, reduces your electricity bills by 75%. However, do you know there are up to 25 appliances that can suck energy from your system whether they are turned on or not? That’s 24 hours, 7 days a week, all year long. These appliances are known as “energy vampires”, they suck energy at a ridiculous amount. This phenomenon is known as standby power; electric power consumed by devices that they are not in use or not turned off. This standby mode accounts an extra 5-10% of energy, used without your knowledge.
Using Smart power strips, saves energy, money and your electronics from power surges. Smart power strips automatically turn off the electricity of things you don’t need. For example, when your turn off your TV, a smart power strip turns off your DVD player, home theater, cable boxes and so on. This also happens when you turn off your computer and forget to unplug the printer, fax, and other devices that would continue to suck energy if left idle. Challenges of Smart Power Strips
Smart power strips can help you conserve energy when properly used but choosing a smart power strip for your home or office; you should know some of its challenges:
- When you choose a power strip that uses a USB cable to detect power levels from your computer, know that many computers power their USB ports all the time. If you have a computer like that, a power strip plugged into the USB port may not automatically turn off power.
- Power strips that are plugged to wall sockets can have power detection challenges too. If the strip’s sensors aren’t precise enough to detect when devices go into standby mode, electronics can continue to draw power they don’t need.
- Some devices like DVRs need ready access to power to perform scheduled tasks. An abrupt power loss would cause them to miss schedules. Abrupt power losses can also cause damage to devices like Inkjet and laser printers that have controlled shutdown sequence. The best way to turn off these devices is to use onboard power switches instead of a power strip.
Smart power strips have challenges but these challenges are nothing compared to the benefits they offer. They make energy use more efficient by saving power and saving cost too.
