Have you ever experienced that gush of wind that comes when a vehicle drives pass you while waiting at a bus stop or walking on the sidewalk? A Turkish firm has harnessed this wind power by building an innovative wind turbine. This new turbine is called Enlil (after the Mesopotamian god of wind & storms) and was created by Deveci Tech from Istanbul, Turkey. The turbine is designed vertically with long blades. It covers a small area and is easy to handle. It is also durable, can be easily assembled as well as disassembled. Enlil also has a solar panel fitted on top of it to generate extra electricity.
The Enlil turbine is capable of producing 1 kilowatt per hour of electricity, a single turbine can provide the average daily energy need of two households. Aside from providing electricity, the device has inbuilt sensors which can measure temperature, humidity, wind speed and CO2. The measurements made by Enlil can also be used to measure a city’s carbon footprint and will contribute to the comfort and safety of the city. Enlil will be able to provide information on possible earthquakes with the earthquake monitoring station.
The Enlil turbine is still in its development stage. The Deveci tech team is still refining its design to improve its efficiency and ensure it is well built before commercial production. The turbine can be installed in parks, near shores or on rooftops but its ideal location is on roadsides. Speeding vehicles on highways can provide enough wind for them to work all day long. The energy generated from this can be transported to places or can be used for street lightings. Also, additional revenue can be generated by placing ads on the blades. Important information like the speed limit or traffic routes can also be displayed on the blades.
Though still in its development stage, the Enlil turbine has been criticized by some observers. One criticism is that if it’s by the roadside, it could create an additional drag which would make engine vehicles work harder and increase fuel consumption. Another concern is its cost of production and its running cost compared to how much energy it will produce in its lifespan.
This criticism is based on assumption as the Enlil turbine has not been commercialized yet. However, when commercialized and if everything looks good (cost included), this technology can be adopted by major cities in Nigeria. It is renewable and can be used to power street lights, this will free up some power on the national grid and could save cost in the long run.
