A battery is a vital part of an inverter, the performance and life of n inverter largely depend on its battery. To get optimal output from the inverter systems, one must know about the inverter batteries and how they work. If the battery is well managed, the inverter can have a very long lifespan. There are several classifications of inverter batteries. Here are a few of them:
- Lead Acid Batteries
- Maintenance Free Batteries

Lead Acid batteries
Lead Acid battery is the oldest type of rechargeable battery. Despite having a very low energy-to-weight ratio and a low energy-to volume ratio, its ability to supply high surge currents means that sells have a relatively large power-to-weight ratio. These features, along with their low cost, make them attractive for use.
As they are inexpensive compared to newer technologies, lead-acid batteries are widely used even when the surge current is not important and other designs could provide higher energy densities. Large-format lead-acid designs are widely used for storage in power supplies in cell phone towers, high-availability settings like hospitals, and stand-alone power systems. For these roles, modified versions of the standard cell may be used to improve storage times and reduce maintenance requirements.
Lead Acid Batteries are the most common inverter Batteries. They are rechargeable in nature and produce a large amount of current. They are light in weight and most economical and can last for 3-4 years but they require regular maintenance. The electrolyte level check and topping up has to be done regularly. They also release harmful gases during charging and discharging, so they must be installed at a well-ventilated place in the home.
Maintenance Free Batteries
Maintenance free batteries are sealed lead acid batteries that do not require electrolyte level check and topping up. They are fit and forget type batteries are safer compared to normal lead acid batteries, but they are costly compared to normal lead-acid batteries and have a shorter lifespan. Due to their construction, the gel and absorbent glass mat (AGM) types of Maintenance Free Batteries, they can be mounted in any orientation and do not require constant maintenance.
The term “maintenance free” is a misnomer as the batteries still require cleaning and regular functional testing. They are widely used in large portable electrical devices, off-grid power systems, and similar roles, where large amounts of storage are needed at a lower cost than other low-maintenance technologies like lithium-ion.
There are three primary types of maintenance free batteries, sealed VR wet cell, AGM and Gel. Gel cells add silica dust to the electrolyte, forming a thick putty-like gel. These are sometimes referred to as “silicone batteries” AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries feature fiberglass mesh between the battery plates which serves to contain the electrolyte.
