Following the ongoing customer enumeration exercise by the Discos, the Network of Nigerian Civil Society Organizations has urged the Discos to intensify their efforts and ensure the enumeration of electricity consumers nationwide in order to establish the actual number of power users across the country. The enumeration exercise is one to bridge the huge financial deficit in Nigeria’s power sector because it would ensure that electricity users pay for the services they get from the Discos which have not been captured by the power firms.
While presenting a paper in Abuja, the DG NNCSOs, Agbonkpolor Splendor said, “Nigerians are willing to pay for electricity, but the truth is that they can’t get it as expected.” According to him, until Nigeria gets the power sector right, nothing will be right.
Discos have said that the ongoing Customer Enumeration Exercise is to improve its service delivery within its coverage area. By definition, enumeration is the complete, ordered listing of all the items in a collection. Discos have called on its customers to please make themselves available for the enumeration exercise.
HOW $350M WORLD BANK LOAN WILL BOOST OFF-GRID ELECTRICITY IN NIGERIA-REA – Independent
The Executive Director, Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Sanusi Ohiare, has released details on how it intends to spend the $350million Loan expected from the World Bank meant for the development of off-grid electricity supply systems in the country under the Nigerian Electrification Project (NEP). It said it intends to increase electricity access to households and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), students and patients at federal universities and universities teaching hospitals throughout the country.
The Agency which has been working with the World Bank Team to develop a robust project that when implemented, will be the largest off-grid electrification project in West Africa said that the fund would be disbursed in four parts – $150m for hybrid solar systems to improve economies of rural communities in the country; $105m for power systems to electrify public universities and teaching hospitals; $75m for standalone solar systems for rural homes, farms and enterprises; and $20m to provide technical assistance to the budding market.
