PRESS RELEASE                 4TH MARCH 2019

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHED, wishes to draw the attention of Security Agencies, Government Functionaries, Electricity users and indeed members of the public that half of Port Harcourt metropolis has been thrown into unwarranted darkness by the residents of Ogbunabali.

The forced outage is sequel to the action of Ogbunabali residents who early this morning barricaded Transmission Station, Z4, located at Nzimiro Junction, Port Harcourt, thereby forcing the station to shut down supply.

In view of the above, Forces Avenue, State Secretariat, Government House, UTC, Moscow Road, Township- entire Borikiri areas are affected.

Others are; UST, D-Line, Diobu, Mile1 , 2, 3, Rumuolumeni axis, Ada George Road,  Ogbunabali, Amadi Flats, and  Aba Road.

The action of the community has led to inability of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, to wheel out power to Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company for onward distribution to her valued customers in the affected areas.

Also, the economic activities of the affected places have been brought to a halt as a result of the sacking of TCN’s officials on duty by the community.

The Ogbunabali community, it will be recalled carried out similar action early this year where it was demanding for 24 hour power supply, employment, compensation, among others.

At several meetings, it was made known to the community that the said place where the facilities of TCN  was located belongs to Federal Government of Nigeria, therefore, Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHED, has no authority over the asset. It is only a source through which power is transmitted to PHED customers.

The protest over power supply is becoming one, too many. Electricity in the whole world is not free, it is always paid for. The community should not coerce PHED into diverting energy received from the grid to their area alone without recourse to other areas and PHED will not be intimidated into doing so.

We have our business strategic plan that accommodates all the customers including Ogbunabali community.

We therefore, call on the relevant government functionaries especially the security agencies to step in and ask the Community to vacate the premises of the TCN with a view to wheeling out supply to PHED customers.
