The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission has directed all Distribution Companies to stop opening accounts for new customers on estimated billing. All new customers applying to the DisCos to be connected to the power supply are expected to be metered.
This includes newly constructed houses, residence, offices, industrial or commercial buildings. This new directive will bring about a great improvement in efforts to close the present metering gaps in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI ).
The challenge of this effort to an average electricity consumer is a possible delay in connection. As it is not possible for ‘a New Electricity Customer’ to be connected to power supply unless when there is an availability of power. In the event of non-availability of meters, the customers may have to wait or remain on the waiting list.
However, this novel directive of NERC to all DISCOS viz stoppage of estimation billing as captured by MYTO 2015 should be commended.
However, the time an average customer may have to wait on ‘ the waiting list ‘ before connected should be factored in and monitored too.
